"Tenía un radar en el lugar del cerebro". Cesare Maldini definió así el talento sin igual de "Il Pepe", como le decían en el fútbol italiano a Juan Alberto Schiaffino.
Había llegado al Milan en 1954, después de haber sido figura con la selección uruguaya en el Mundial de Suiza y haber protagonizado la mayor hazaña del fútbol en la Copa del Mundo de 1950.
Schiaffino, para quienes lo vieron jugar, era "un malabarista con y sin la pelota", un adelantado para sus tiempos. Alto, delgado, espigado, siempre engominado, corría y dominaba la pelota con simpleza.
Siempre con la cabeza levantada para ver el campo de juego y a sus compañeros.
Schiaffino, aún hoy es ídolo del Milan y sus hinchas lo recuerdan como "uno de los más grandes".
Sin embargo, toda aquella gloria que cosechó en el fútbol, puede dejar el Uruguay.
La medalla de Campeón del Mundo de 1950, relojes (Rolex) obsequiados en Italia y varias medallas obtenidas durante su exitosa carrera en Peñarol serán rematadas por la firma Bavastro el 19 de mayo.
"Va a ser un remate temático, diría, ya que habrá varios objetos del fútbol, no sólo de Schiaffino, también de (José) Nasazzi y (Atilio) Lombardi", explicó Damián Gahn, responsable de la casa de remates.
La AUF, Peñarol y el Museo del Fútbol, se sienten "impotentes" cuando ven y escuchan sobre estos remates.
"No lo hemos hablado, pero es un tema para tratarlo en el Consejo, no hay dudas. Habría que tratarlo, evaluarlo y tomar alguna decisión", indicó Lucas Blasina, integrante del Ejecutivo de la AUF.
Una posición similar existe en filas aurinegras. 
"Estamos atentos a todo. No descartamos alguna intervención, ya lo hemos hablado con algunos compañeros informalmente, quizás lo tratemos en el Consejo Directivo.
Pero esto es hoy, después no sé que podrá pasar", señaló Edgar Welker, vicepresidente de Peñarol. "Supongo que debe haber interés de todo el mundo y del Milan también", agregó.
"Nos interesa muchísimo pero en honor a la verdad, la respuesta es clara: no podemos hacer nada, ni siquiera pugnar en la subasta.
Buscaremos alguna forma de que alguien lo haga por nosotros, esperemos que no salgan del país y alguien las pueda donar", señaló Mario Romano, titular del Museo del Fútbol.

Juan Alberto Schiaffino Villano nació en Montevideo el 28 de julio de 1925 y falleció 13 de noviembre de 2002, a los 77 años de edad.
Es considerado uno de los mejores futbolistas del Siglo XX.
Fue el conductor de Uruguay cuando ganó la Copa Mundial de Brasil en 1950 y en el Mundial de Suiza 1954 (cuarto).
Se destacó con gran suceso en Peñarol y Milan de Italia.
